For example, would planning your dinners for the week ahead of time when you go grocery shopping help you waste less money at the store? Create less waste in packaging, and trips to the store or drive-thru? Waste less time and stress thinking and planning dinner as an after thought at the end of an exhausting day?

Are there areas where you could look at something you currently consider waste and change your perception? An example: That pile of food scraps leftover from cooking and eating dinner. Is that waste? Trash? For some it is. Straight into the trash can. Others might see compost, or food for the chickens. Perhaps that towel that now has a hole torn in the middle looks like trash or waste at the outset, but could it be cut into smaller pieces and hemmed for hand towels or cleaning rags?

Can you think about what our parents or grand parent, or even great grandparents might have done in a time before plastic food storage and plastic wrap? I believe there is much to be learned from our pioneer and depression raise ancestors about how to reduce the creation of waste.

Archeology shows us that every where on the planet and in every age, there is always a place where the trash goes, often to be buried to rot away (or become preserved forever). But, what level of use happened before an item was relegated to the trash pile? And there are now multitudes more humans on this planet now than ever before, and those numbers are not going down. And so much more of our cast off is now made to be thrown away.

That's an interesting concept isn't it!? The creation of waste. There are industries around creating things for the intent of throwing them away! Think of the packaging that so many of our products come in! Someone is getting paid to design and make those things. What is it's TRUE purpose? Is it necessary? Maybe to keep things from getting broken. Sometimes just so that the things can be stored and shipped more efficiently. It's easier to stack boxes of the same size and shape on a pallet than 100 coffee pots. If it is necessary, could it be made from other materials that could have another life after it's current job was over?

There is such an opportunity to reconsider the merchandise on the market. Can we fix it when it's broken, instead of throwing it away and buying another? Can we use it or part of it for something else? Can we choose products that do not have unnecessary packaging that needs to be discarded?

Can we as the consumer change the economy by choosing our products differently? What about things that are made closer to home and require less transportation and packaging? Or products that are packaged more thoughtfully?

Waste used to be the off cut from things, the fabric trimmed away in the
creation of a dress; the wood scraps left from building a house. But
were those things truly waste? Some might argue that case, but how often
did our predecessors sew those fabric scraps together to make a quilt,
or stuff a pillow or bed? Wood scraps might have been used to heat the
home or cook food.

Waste is everywhere! We cannot avoid it. But what can we do? How can we encourage as the consumer to help reduce the amounts of it that are not getting repurposed.

It begins with our own selves. We do not need the government to tell us. We know. We can adjust our consuming. We can adjust our own repurposing. We can adjust our perspective. We can think like our ancestors. We can be creative. One person, one household, at a time.

Let's think about that next time we are about ready to throw that thing in the trash.
In a time when everything is extra, that extra does not have have to be waste! Consider how you can made it a BONUS!

Have a beautiful day Living Well!
Love
SuziQue

We need to begin to recognize that it is happening.
To be honest, it can more often a subtle ongoing thing, rather than a dramatic emotional vomit.
When we leak, whether a tiny occasional drip, a constant trickle, or a pressurized stream, t's much like that leaking pipe in the bathroom wall that I talked about in the last post and causes damage in our lives. Whether slowly, or suddenly.

But, recognizing is always the first step. Acknowledging it. Accepting that it is happening.
No blaming. No victim mode. Just recognition. Just seeing it.

Next:
Try having a little conversation with your Leak:

"Oh. Hey there Leak. I see that you have decided to show up for today's activities. I know that you have a job to do in helping me release pressure, so I do appreciate and thank you for letting me see that there is an issue going on that needs to be addressed. But right now, your behavior is causing more damage than it is fixing the source of the situation, so I am going to ask you to back off a little so that I can clean up the mess and try to find the source, and do some repair work."

Sometimes it requires an immediate apology to someone directly impacted.
A lot of the time it requires more internal work; digging in to get a better understanding of the source of the leak.

In a similar way that it is not always obvious where exactly that pipe leak is coming from because water always runs to the lowest point of release; so do our leaking emotions. In order to find the source, we have to stop the flow, clean up the debris, and follow it backward until we can locate the point of origin.

Some of this we might be able to do through a mindful journaling practice. Just do some emotional vomit on the paper. In a beautiful journal. On scrap paper, a napkin, whatever. But I DO recommend physically writing with a pen(not erasable pencil) on paper, becasue the process of gathering your thoughts in your head, and the emotions in your heart, and collecting them together in your shoulder and releasing them down your arm, through your fingers, and out onto the paper is POWERFUL! It's messy. It's hard. It's painful. It's helpful. It's worth it.

If this feels scary, to put all that hard yucky messy stuff on paper, I suggest that you DO IT ANYWAY. Let the tears flow. Let the words flow. Let the yuck out. It doesn't have to make sense. It can be a list of words and feelings! Doesn't even have to be complete sentences! Doesn't have to be a cohesive story. Just brain DUMP it OUT of your body onto the paper! It might fill pages and pages. It might be a 3x5 card! It doesn't matter, just get it out of your body!

And then burn it!

Have a ceremonial fire, in a fireplace, bonfire pit, or some other safe and contained place; please don't just light it on fire in your living room!

I like to do this outside where we have a bonfire pit in our back yard. It's an additional time of prayer and meditation for me watching the fire consume the paper, the words, the emotions and experiences. I imagine as the fire consumes it, and the pain becomes smoke that the air is lifting it up to my God in Heaven (or however you want to think of your higher power) and I am giving it back to him to turn into something more productive and useful in my life.

Sometimes I will make a duplicate of the original writing before I burn it: photo copy, or maybe I'll write in my "real" journal a summary of the emotional vomit, then in a month, or two, I'll re-read that entry and see what has changed.

I am amazed every single time at how healing and change can happen so softly and gently that I hardly notice it, until I look back and see where I was compared to where I am not, and those journal entries are milepost markers.

Keep working through the hard stuff. The healing is worth it.
And everything you learn about yourself on the other side is extra bonus stuff in living your life well!
As much love as ever,
SuziQueSuzi Quillenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12457151782431846332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4716082025048061651.post-67756543191417342652019-07-20T12:24:00.000-07:002019-07-20T12:27:31.000-07:00Emotional Leaking - What is it?

Emotional Leaking.
Have you heard that term before?

It's when unspoken emotions "leak" out of our bodies through unintended words, misdirected frustration or anger, actions, tears or other emotional actions like laughing inappropriately, tone of voice, facial expressions, or energy.

Sometimes the cause of the leaking is really obvious to us. We had a fight with with someone, or had a bad experience that left us in a bad mood, and we're having a difficult time separating that experience from the rest of our day (Week? Month? Life?) and we drag that negative emotion around with us and end up sharing that negative energy with other people that had nothing to do with the negative experience.

Maybe we just had to most happily amazing experience with a loved one, or experience at a store or business, and we want everyone to know about it. Maybe we don't tell anyone, but we just start smiling a little more intentionally at everyone we pass, hold a door, leave a flower, sent a message.

Sometimes the cause is deeper. Long held unspoken fears, hurt feelings, seemingly long forgotten childhood experiences, anxieties, even our deeper mindsets, can rise to the surface and leak into our daily experience, and we might not even recognize that it is happening.

Sometimes, we know we are leaking. Sometime we do not.

Is this bad? Not necessarily. Let's take a look at a couple of analogies.

The first one is a story:

There was a woman who had to walk down a path every day to get water from the well. She had 2 buckets, and carried one in each hand. One bucket had a crack, and she always carried it in her left hand. Each day she went to fill the buckets, by the time she walked back to the house the bucket in her left hand was empty becasue it had leaked out along the path. The 2 buckets were talking on the porch where they were left, and the cracked one was lamenting and feeling useless for never being able to successfully bring water back to the house. This caused the woman to have to make additional trips to the well. She was old and this trip was getting more and more difficult for her, and the bucket felt like it was letting the woman down. The intact bucket looked out and down the path they traveled daily and pointed out to the cracked bucket that the side of the trail where she carried the cracked bucket was rich with lush veggies and flowers.

This next analogy, I want you to think about the effect of a leaking pipe in the wall of your bathroom. Even a tiny occasional drip, over time can cause detrimental damage to the structure of your home. And just becasue you cannot see the leak, and you cannot see the wetness that it is leaving, does not mean it is not happening! And how do you KNOW that it is happening. You often times cannot know until you break open the dry wall. You might be doing a bathroom remodel, and discover that there has been a leak for a long time that you were unaware of! And with a bit of luck, you discovered it before any crucial damage was done!

I think one of the differences in determining if it's good or bad to leak, is to determine the underlying aspects.

Maybe we have pressed those emotions and mindsets down tight and deep and are avoiding dealing with them on a conscious level. Trust me. They will leak out. And sadly, it is usually the more negative and difficult to face emotions and mindsets that leak the most. And are certainly the most toxic for our lives, and for those around us.

So, now that we understand that this is a real thing that is happening, what do we do about it?
I'll write about that in the next post.
So, for now; pay attention to your underlying emotions, and how they might be leaking.
I had such an experience just this morning, which is what prompted me to write on this topic.
I figure if it happens to me, it happens to you, and maybe through sharing we can all heal a little bit more!

Because everything we learn to make our lives better is EXTRA in this journey and process of Living Well!
All my Love,

We all want more, don't we?
More peace. More money. More time. More love. More fresh air. More cheesecake LOL
Whatever it is, what if you could have more?

What if you already have that MORE?
and don't even know it?

What if every thing in your life is extra?
What if every thing you experience happens FOR you, instead of TO you?

We all come into this world naked and dependent.
Through the course of our journey on this planet, things are added to us.
Some of those things are soft and gentle. Some are hard and callusing.
Is it the thing itself or the way we experience it that determines it's positive or negative influence on our life? And what is it that determines how we receive those things?

Take some time today to just notice all of the abundance you have right now. Do you have food? Clothes the wear? A place to live? Are your bills paid?

If so, be thankful. Say it out loud. Write it down.

If not, those are the things you already know you need to be improving. But have you taken the time to consider how these deficiencies are shaping you? What are you learning about your deeper resiliency skills?

In this world, every thing is extra.
You get to decide if that means it's a bonus!
Or if that mean something more transactional.

Be blessed lovelies!Suzi Quillenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12457151782431846332noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4716082025048061651.post-49739672827285573162018-09-08T13:16:00.071-07:002020-09-17T14:20:14.869-07:00DIY Homemade Power Protein Bars<span face=""trebuchet ms" , sans-serif">I first learned a version of this idea a couple years ago from a web search, but I have changed it a LOT and I like it even better with the changes I made! Not something I do often being allergic to sheep wool, but I have been told on several occasions that the process that makes it washable should take out the "things" that make me react ... First off that isn't true in my case! And I had a request from a friend and some in my gifted stash to get used up, so I thought I'd try it out.

I have been hearing from others for a couple years now about super wash growing and getting bigger after a project is completed, so I wanted to test this out as well.

Here is my perspective. Super wash is still an allergen for me, it still grows after stitching, and will still felt up if you throw it in the washing machine and dryer.

Here is how one of my projects turned out, and what I did about it.
Read on to find out more ...

I made this hat using a super wash wool that had been given to me:

But it just kept stretching bigger, even after tossing in the dryer to try to tighten it up. So, I tucked it away until the other day. NOW I have a plan to avoid throwing it in the trash!

I turned it upside down and pinched in the sides ... Like this ...

Then I took some other scrap yarn that matched in color and crocheted a heavy cord .... And poked that through the accordion pleats ...

Did that on both ends, and tied the cord ends together ....

I am in awe of them, and I respect and thank them for choosing to protect and defend to their very lives.
I can actually "see things" in my subconscious when I am near certain friends who have served in some of the most important theaters on different continents and in different decades.

If you haven't yet, I encourage you to see all of these movies. Not necessarily in a movie marathon or something.

It will be powerful. And thought provoking. And important.

1. Acts of Valor

Utilizing Active US Navy SEALs to play the role of, well, US Navy SEALs; Acts of Valor had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Holding my breath, and FEELING the tension and almost feeling like I was there with them. The realistic manor in which this was filmed heightened the powerful emotions, and I cried openly at the depth of the seriousness and intensity. I cried because this was real. I cried because these are real people risking their lives. These are real people that do a job that is so challenging, and requires such difficult decisions, that the scenario had to be TONED DOWN for the big screen! This is not a fictional story filled the with faces of well known Hollywood handsomes. There are no cleverly written lines. This is important for people to see and understand and know. This is REAL. We saw this in the theater when it first came out. The theater was still and silent as it ended, and we all just sat there quietly watching as photos and video clips of the real soldiers' lives flashed before our eyes, and until all the credits had passed. Not a dry eye to be found.

2. American Sniper

Most of us have now come to recognize the story of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. The Warrior who served several tours in Afghanistan and hallowed for his hyper marksmanship, lauded as the most lethal sniper in US Military History. Thanks to the thoughtful directing of Clint Eastwood, this movie is powerful, and shares a lot about what is happening for family and friends on the home front while our Warriors are serving, and again as warriors are attempting to re-integrate back to "normal life". Difficult choices are being made on both sides, and relationship things are challenging, and yet the commitment to each other is as strong as the commitment to country. We are all now familiar with the part of the story where he and another Warrior are
murdered by a young man recently returned from the conflicts. This actually happens while the movie is being filmed, and the intended ending is modified. His widow asks that the project is continued. We saw this movie in the theater, and I found myself holding my breath every time he pulled that rifle to his shoulder and peered through the scope, releasing my breath only once the target had been achieved. This movie is an important reminder, not only of the level of talent and skill our warriors have and the level of training they go through, but also of the human side of their lives. A debt of gratitude is owed to the families at home, waiting and loving and worrying. Again, as the movie ends, the entire auditorium is silent except for those of us crying as the final scenes of real footage of the funeral procession, and the credits roll. No one moves until the lights come on.

3. Lone Survivor

Another movie based on actual events and real people in modern war. The title gives away that this story does not have a happy Hollywood ending. The power of their brother-bond as soldiers and warriors is a huge focus here. We watched this at home, and I was riveted. LOTS of "F-Bombs", but totally appropriate for the story. I cried. Again. I cried because what seams like the right and humane thing to do turns out to be the worst thing they could have done. I cried because those decision have to be made in war. I cried because these men bounced down cliffs, and were shot multiple times, yet they continued to fight in an attempt to bring down the evil that not only wanted to kill them, but wants us all dead as well. I cried because through unspeakable pain and injury, these heroes fought the enemy until their very last breath. I cried because in the midst of hell, there are good people, and soon the protected become the protectors. This time, it was my very own living room that fell silent as the real life footage scrolled across the screen, and the real faces of real heroes filled my home. Tears falling from my eyes.

I THANK GOD for men like those portrayed in these movies.
I thank GOD that some of them in generations past were my family.
I think GOD for those that are friends in my life now.
I honor them.
I revere them.
I grieve the loss of them on this
planet.
I grieve for their families who loved them enough to let them go and fight for our country, and the world.
I grieve for us, as a nation, and
yet rejoice that there are such heroes in this generation.

Because of men like those portrayed in these movies, we all have the opportunity to
Live Well
Love,
Crochet was once an embellishment exclusively for the garments of the upper
echelons and the elite.
Crocheted laces have a long history that begins in the early
1820’s, with the earliest known printed examples of crochet patterns from a
Dutch magazine called Penelope circa 1824.

Some years earlier there is a
descriptive narrative from 1812 that describes “shepherd’s knitting” as a
method of making garments from hand-spun wool. This yarn was likely made by
collecting tufts of wool that had snagged on bushes or might have been in the
animal’s sleeping area, combing it, and using the hands to pull the fibers
apart and twist them together. A hook made from a comb, or carved from a stick
would then be used to work the loops to form the fabric.

Crochet began to solidify itself as a ladies fine work in
the mid 1800’s, and purses and handbags were some of the first articles
crocheted with published patterns made regularly as a demonstration of one’s
fine workman ship and wealth. Stitched from silk, gold and linen threads, these
elegant satchels would speak volumes about a ladies status without her having
to utter a word.

Some of the most identifiable crocheted articles begin to
emerge in circa 1845 when Ursuline Nuns at the Presentation Convent in
Blackrock, County Cork Ireland. As the infamous potato famine left families
perishing, a school was established to teach the art of making crocheted lace
to help relieve economic distress.

Known as Irish Lace, this unique and often
easily identified lace technique is lavishly embellished with individually
crocheted flowers, roses and vines, on a crocheted lace mesh. Often these
pieces were made by many hands, as one person might make flowers, and another
leaves, and another would have the task of joining the piece work to create the
final product.

While the world of lace was revolutionized with the
development of Irish Lace, American Pioneers made crochet a useful pastime. The
adaptability and portability of crochet found it everywhere across the growing
nation. While sewing and knitting were constant necessities, crochet became a
beautiful pastime which allowed women mostly, of all ages, to create beautiful
items for no other purpose than to beautify an otherwise utilitarian
environment. Lovely window coverings and lace garment edgings were common in
women’s magazines.

Community knitting of socks became a Patriotic necessity
during any war, but in particular WWI we so even children pitching in, and
there is still quite a bit of evidence in antique propaganda that can be found.
But as the war came to its end, leisure work began to make its appearance once
more. Women had become more businesslike in their attire as materials and the
industry to make them were directed to supporting the war efforts. As lace making
began to make its appearance again, it’s output did not, and another element of
women’s fashion developed as these laces were more and more frequently applied
and made for undergarments. As the Roaring 20’s blossomed, and racy was
becoming more the fashion, enticed young women turned their hands toward the
making of scandalous “scanties”. Crochet designers published pattern books of
boudoir items that were delicate, lacy and feminine.

Crochet remained a pastime of creating finery, until the
rebellious children of the 1960’s picked up rope, yarn, wire and anything else
they could get a hook on and went on tangents that no one ever thought existed.
Men and women created baskets, turned Granny’s Square into and octagon, created
three dimensional shapes and utilized colors that had never been explored
before.

Our fashion pattern magazines and books now explore even further, and yet still
the foundational beautification of domestic necessities still has a strong
place in today’s crochet.

I feel like I have been neglecting some of the other equally important elements that I began this blog about ... Namely living a full, whole and bountiful life.

Not everything in my worls is happy go lucky, and many things do not come naturally easy to me, but I do have a bit of a knack for letting things SEEM that way sometimes.

I think this is one of my (many) vanities. Which is funny to me, because I'll go anywhere without make-up and the latest fashions are several years from being donated to the second hand store so I can buy them and put them in my closet. But I do have may vanities nonetheless.

To this day, I remember seeing a drawing on the office wall when I was about 3 in a pre-school, or daycare situation for a short period of time.

Isn't it funny how things can jump into our heads and influence us all of our lives, from even the very youngest ages!
Some influences are good, and others maybe not as healthy.
I'm on the fence about this one today.

I couldn't find a similar drawing, but this photo of a baby duck will serve just fine for my demonstration:

Cover the photo from the waterline down, and only look at the baby duck calmly floating along in the water, relaxed and happy ... Peaceful huh!? Makes you feel calm, and at ease. Until you understand what is happening under the water!

Those little legs are working like crazy to keep that little fluff ball moving in the right direction, and afloat.

That drawing influenced me at the age of 3, and I didn't even know it. It has impacted the way that I think about the perception others have of me. It has influenced how much I let others see of my struggles and efforts to propel my life and objectives forward.

I have no opinion at this time if that is right thinking or wrong thinking.

It just IS.

And while I may not be sharing the behind the scenes struggles with more people, I am recognizing how long that has been a function in my life, and that maybe I am not as open a book as I used to like to think.

But I thought is was an important recognition. What are the little children in your life seeing, that you might not think they see?

One row of double crochet is slightly taller than 2 rows of single crochet, depending on your yarn, hook, and personal tension.

The down side for me with double crochet, is that I do not like the gaps between the stitches for a lot of projects, unless I am making something lacy, or am intending to weave something through the spaces.

A couple of years ago I learned about connecting double crochets, and WOW ... What a difference it has made in several of my projects! You'll bee seeing it more in upcoming designs.

I am also NOT a fan of the long starting chain for afghans, but especially garments! It is too easy for it to get twisted, and is just isn't stretchy and flexible, so not comfortable at all around the edges of garments. I am a lace maker from the beginning of my crochet life ... often referred to as a "Threadie" which is where I learned to make foundation double crochet and foundation single crochet.

Over the years I have combined these techniques together and come up with some great techniques that really are game changers! I present for you here four video tutorials that I hope you find useful and helpful!

Be sure to share these, Pin them on Pintrest, and share them on Facebook and so forth! Let's make them viral! I hope that my tutorials take some of the challenge and mystery out of creating meaningful crochet work for Stitchers everywhere!

This is the Foundation Single Crochet.

Try out the Foundation Double Crochet:

Build on your basic skills by trying the Connected Double Crochet:

Now, put it all together ... DO NOT psych yourself out here!
Take a deep breath and watch this tutorial as many times as you need to to totally master the
Connected Foundation Double Crochet!

Growing and building your stitching skills also grows and builds your confidence and creativity!
Which is another amazing part of
This is one of the prettiest patterns that I have seen in a long time!

I first found it on the Berroco Free Pattern Pages, and knew right away I HAD to make it!

I used the Hayfield DK w/Wool that I carry in my yarn shop, and it worked beautifully!

However, I did find that the way the original pattern is written to be confusing and frustrating, so I set about making it more clear and understandable. Beautiful patterns shouldn't be scary :)

Here is the pattern as I edited it Suzi's Edit of the Lisbon Poncho

The texture of the pattern is beautiful, and I can see myself making this pattern again, using my edited version of course.

Don't be afraid to play with patterns that others have written. Much like cooking recipes, they are wonderful starting points for more amazing creativity! I started the pattern again by making a flat, solid, circle with crochet thread that had the correct number of starting stitches. Worked the pattern as usual, only in thread ... and VIOLA ... an adorable draw-string pouch! It could be made deeper by working the rows that create the body one extra time

However I have recently read that this is not a chemical reaction after all.
It is a physical reaction ...
The whipped condition of the Ivory soap causes it to have air bubbles trapped inside.
As the soap heats in the Microwave, it gets hot and causes the soap to get soft. The
microwaves bouncing around in the oven excite the water and air molecules inside the soap cause them to move in opposite directions from each other and vaporize.
The vaporization of these molecules causes the tiny air pockets or bubbles trapped inside the soap to rapidly expand.
Since the soap has been heated and is in a soft state, the expanding air and water molecules
can easily push it out into a new foam like substance.

I'm not sure which rationale is correct, but I do know it's super fun and gets and smells out of the microwave!!

Check out my video and then try it yourself! I give some little tips on what to do with that fluffed up soap after you are done. Let me know what you discover!
This Grami LOVES to make fun things for her grandchildren, so when my daughter-in-law hinted about a floppy bunny ear hat for my granddaughter I got busy!

This hat is stitched using a size H hook and Peter Pan Cupcake yarn; this is a
SUPER soft fluffy 50/50 acrylic/nylon yarn perfect for babies! The
50gram balls have about 90meters.

I used one full skein for the back of the ears and the body of the hat; a little bit of a second color for the inside of the ears and a
third color for edge joining the inside and outside ear sections and making the ribbing on the hat body edge.

I started first by making the ears. I did a lot of searching to find the right thing and finally happily settled on this one: Mama G's Bunny Ear Pattern. I made a total of 4 pieces. Two are pink, for the inside of the ear, and two are made from the hat body yarn.

After weaving in the ends, I aligned each pair of ear pieces, one inside and one outside wrong sides together and with the beginning knots at the same ends. Starting at the end where the beginning knots are and with the inside facing me, I began the third color yarn in the first stitch with a slip stitch working through the stitches on both pieces to join. Ch2, and dc down the row, inserting the hook in one loop on each ear piece.

To turn the corner at the tip of the ear, I identified the "tip" and one stitch on either side. I made 2 dc in each "either side" stitch, with a singular dc in the "tip" stitch. Dc back down the other side, and finish off, leaving a long tail to secure the ear to the hat later.

To make the hat body I followed my basic hat tutorial, and added 2 rounds of front post/back post dc to make the ribbing. To determine the diameter of the crown, measure the circumference of the
head and divide that number by 3.15 (pi). This will give an approximate
diameter.

If the crown will not lay flat for you here are a couple of TIPS:
1. For ruffling edges, you are getting too many stitches, or just too much length due to individual stitching style. Back out your rounds until it is laying flat, and stitch your increases in less frequent spaces.
2. For cupping, you are not getting enough stitches or length, again often do to personal technique. Simply back your rounds out until the crown lays flat again and add increases in a couple of additional locations.

Once the hat body was finished and ends woven in, I folded the attaching end of the ears in half, and used a couple of stitches to hold them in place. I used long pins to temporarily hold them in place on the hat until I had them evenly and pleasantly located. The I used the long ending tail to securely sew them to the hat body.

All in all the whole project could easily be done in an evening!
Ear version #2!! After making Sara's hat, I got a customer request for another, but with BIGGER ears!

I made these ears single layer, but you could do them double layer so the inside and outside are different colors.

R1: 3FSC (foundation single crochet) Here is the video tutorial for FSC
R2: Ch2, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each sc across, then FSC
R3: Ch1, turn. Sc across the row.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until there are 9 sc.

Work straight until the entire piece measures 10 inches, or 2 inches short of your desired length.

Decrease by sc2tog at the beginning and end of each row until 3sc remain. Finish off.

Attach trim at the beginning of R1. Work counter clockwise making 1sc in each ends of row, around the end, and back down the other side, leaving the FSC un-worked.

Change colors as often as desired.

I folded a little dart in the FSC row, and with the folds facing forward, stitched to secure near the top of the hat.
This is NOT my pattern ... I found it HERE

It was SO clever, that I had to try it, but as you can see, it is written in some sort of what I guess is an Eastern European language ... thankfully they have great photos in their tutorial!

Here is my version ... Of course I made mine Seattle Seahawks colors cause I'm a 12 ;)

This is the first time I have outright interviewed someone for an article!

But the story of my business neighbor, forty-nine year old Shane Robertson, inspired me!

Shane’s fond memories of
growing up in the Midwest are rich in deep memories of the days and hours spent
with his grandfather. Together he and his granddad had hunted, fished, trapped,
and painted, “He was a true renaissance man; Grandpa could do anything.”
Robertson says of this man that taught him so much. Drawing and painting were
pastimes that Shane took too naturally, and developed a great passion for.
Though their time together was cut short when his grandpa passed away when
Robertson was nine, the spirit of adventure and creativity never left him.

Robertson continued to draw throughout his school years, becoming very
proficient in graphite and color pencil work in his teen years. Mystical images
of beautiful maidens on horseback, in misty lands matured into desert scenes.
But, like so many things about life, in his early twenties the need to earn a
living took precedence, and he set his artistic passion aside. He sold and gave
away all of his tools, supplies, drawings and paintings, and set out to explore
what seemed at the time, grander and more important things.

Robertson spent a few years fishing in the Barring Sea of Alaska. Of this, he
says it was the hardest job he’s ever had. “One winter night, we were wakened
just a short time into our already limited sleep, to dress quickly and get up
on deck! The vessel was listing because waves had built up a thick layer of ice
on one side of the boat; up over the rails, and onto the deck. We had to take
bars and bats and anything we could get our hands on to bust up the ice and get
it off the boat!” While he is glad that he experienced this dangerous job, it’s
not one he says he would do again! “But,” he adds, “It does give a greater
appreciation for that piece of fish you are served at a restaurant, or buy at
the store!”

His most recent career years were in the property management industry, working
with one of the largest management companies in the country. He has had the
opportunity to live in some luxurious urban buildings, sometimes living
alongside local celebrities such as Russell Wilson.

Recently married to his wife Jeneen, and living on picturesque Lake Rosiger,
Robertson’s childhood passion for painting began to reemerge about a year ago,
as his form of relaxation and meditation amid his hectic work responsibilities.
Then when his career in property maintenance came to an end a few months ago,
he sat back and thought about what he really wanted to do with his life, and
recognized that his passion for art helps him feel grounded and had become an almost
daily necessity.

In re-exploring his art, Robertson has developed what might
be called his signature style. Dubbed his “Kalli style”, he first painted this
technique for and then named it after, his granddaughter Kalliope. Robertson is
also experimenting with and exploring other techniques and styles with acrylic
paints. His paintings are full of vivid colors and rich textures that easily
draw the viewer in. Layers of color, technique and texture merge to delight the
eye, and provide much for the mind to explore. One might spend quite a long
time examining one of his pieces and never really take in all of the detail and
depth he creates.

Robertson has recently rented a small space in downtown
Granite Falls as his studio, where he and his dog Beauregard can be found
hanging out together to the sounds of heavy metal music, and bringing life to the
amazingly beautiful art that has it’s genesis in Robertson’s mind!

At this time, Robertson only sells his art on occasion when commissioned. Most
of it is created as gifts for family and friends as he studies and explores new
mediums and techniques during his job searching process. He is considering
showing some his pieces at the upcoming Granite Falls, WA 49th annual
Rail Road Days Street Fair, “Just for the fun of meeting people and introducing
myself to the community”.

God has created each of us as human-BEINGS, not human-doings.

I believe that He is far more concerned with how we BE than what we do!

So, instead of making a "List of Things to DO Today", try making a list of things to BE today.

This is my first list. Already I see things that feel so good I think they will be regulars on the list. It has also inspired the way I think about tasks, and what that means as far as me BEING instead of doing ...

Of course there are things we must DO as an act of BEING ... If I list "Be Clean" then I must DO the dishes, or do the laundry, for example.

But this exercise helps me to see how the doing is the tool to the being, not the other way around.

What do YOU think?
Will you try this?
Will you share your BE List with us, with your Facebook or Instagram?

I am inviting you to participate with me!
I am currently calling it The BE Movement #MyBeList

Here are some of the other BE lists I have made.
Share yours on Facebook and use the hashtag #MyBeList

There is something about the late summer early fall practice of putting up food for the winter that feels so good!

The idea of not letting the fresh produce go to waste makes me feel rich! Responsible! And nostalgic.

Food doesn't come from the grocery store! That's where we most often take possession of it, but God has provided us with abundance all around! For free! I have been gathering huckleberries from the woods around my home and raspberries from my sister-in-law's patch that grows wild! I put them in a single layer on cookie sheets and shallow baking pans, set them in the freezer, then store them in sandwich size freezer bags! Blackberries are just starting to ripen in my area, so I'll be adding them to the freezer in the same way!

The other day I picked a hod full of peaches from my S.I.L. :) They are going bad quickly this year, so this morning I slipped sliced and stoned them, and put them in freezer bags.

We don't happen to eat much in the way of jams and jellies, but many love that method of preserving fruit.

My S.I.L. will have grapes ready in the fall. I think I'll borrow my folk's steamer to make and can juice!

Having tasty seasonal food to eat in the middle of winter is such a blessing! I'm already looking forward to having fresh peach pie come December! Last year our green beans did really well, so they got blanched and frozen and were great for tossing in crock pot stews!

Foods harvested late in their growing cycle have higher nutritional value than than those that ripen in a box ... And when glanced and frozen, more of that nutrition is preserved!

Its good for your body.
Good for your heart.
Good for your wellness.
Eating well is Living Well!

Here is a great technique for joining a new skein of yarn without tying a knot.

I like this particularly for afghans as the extra bulk will not be noticeable.

Consider where this will be useful, or where it might show.

This could be a fun way to use up scraps of similar weight yarn to make a random colored afghan, or crazy fun colorful sweater or scarf!
I am so amazed at the bounty that God provides! How tiny seeds turn into heads of lettuce and seemingly little bushes can be SO covered with tiny little gems of deliciousness!

How can we just drive past these marvels and ignore that God is providing nutrition! Yes, the birds, and in my neighborhood sometimes the bears, eat them, so when I harvest from nature, I am not gluttonous, and I be sure to leave some for the other creatures that roam our woods!

I have been picking huckleberries around my yard and freezing them! Also the raspberries that grow in my brother-in-law and sister-in-law's yarn ... they don't eat them but just let them grow ... I think so that I can come get them and day dream about childhood summers picking raspberries warmed in the sun with my grandma!

So far I have 5 sandwich bags of huckleberries (this is no small feat as those things are tiny!) and 13-15 sandwich bags of raspberries tucked into the deep freeze, just waiting for one of those days in the fall or winter when I am longing for the taste of summer! Think of all the money I am saving by harvesting the free food that God provides all around us!

These berries will be SO delicious!

I will make: scones, pie, cream cheese coffee cake, shortbread cookies, danishes, and chicken and fish dishes ... I will put them on cereal, and in cottage cheese and yogurt ... OK, you get the picture!

According to several sources, huckleberries are very good for you! And because the grow wild, they are not genetically modified and are organic! They
are very high in antioxidants and have several other health benefits!
here are some of them as listed on Lifestyle Lounge's article about them ...

THEN in conversation with some friends about my amazing discoveries ... Well ... Look what happens next ...

I should have chilled the hard lemonade in the freezer for 15 minutes and used 2 cups of berries to give a more "slushie" like consistency, but it was SO delicious!

As you can see, the possibilities are endless!
